What is Graphic Designing?
Graphic design is a term coined for visual communication through space, images, colours and typography. All these factors are important in the graphic design to build up a company’s overall outlook.
Some uses of graphic design is usually for corporate identity (as a logo or brand), advertisements, publications(e.g. magazines and books), billboards, website images, product packaging and more. Graphic design uses composition and design elements to help unify the company’s branding as a whole.
What are the types of graphic design we use?
1. Vector Designing
Vector design is by far the most commonly used type of designing by and corporate company. This form of graphic design usually uses Illustrator or other vector compatible softwares to design a clear, pixel-less image that can be scaled down to any size. Vector designing requires some knowledge on the charting of points and use of the RGB/CMYK colours used for web based graphics or printable media. We’ll talk about how Vectors are designed based on it’s media at another time.
2. Icon Design
Graphic design is tied to website designing and other forms of digital media. A favicon for example, is usually a 16×16 pixel image that is used for tabs. Another application of icon design would be app development. A corporate brand must design their logo and icons based on simplicity, memorability, and other factors that affect how effective an icon would work.
Another use of icons would be web application icons. These icons are usually in the form of an item, such as a home button, or a phone button to indicate that it is a link to the main page of a website or to call someone.
3. Typography Design
Letters and alphabets are usually one of the less essential components to a company. It utilises the understanding of how type works and what type of style is required for a company’s branding. Common examples are Times new Roman, Calibri and Arial.
4. Photographic Manipulation Design
Last but not least, photo manipulation is another aspect of graphic design which may be overlooked. Photos which are taken may have unwanted objects or people in them. A professional designer is able to completely remove or manipulate the picture such that such elements are hidden so that the overall picture looks good enough to use as banners.
Another type of photo manipulation is editing of image to change the overall feel of the image. Cropping the image slightly to emphasise on certain areas using the Golden Rule is one. Another is the manipulation of light and color using brightness and contrasts to change the area of focus or make the focus ‘pop out’.
